How Septic Tank Pumping Works in Houston County Homes
A septic tank holds wastewater long enough for solids to settle to the bottom and for grease and lighter material to float to the top. Bacteria break down some of the material in the tank, but they cannot handle everything, so sludge builds up over time. A pumper uses a vacuum truck to remove the liquid and solids, leaving the tank clean and ready to hold new wastewater.
The baffles and outlet inside the tank keep solids from leaving the tank and reaching the drain field. When the tank is full of solids, the liquid carries more material toward the field than the soil can absorb easily. Pumping restores the space the tank needs to separate solids and protect the drain field. A standard visit usually includes a look at the tank, the baffles, and the outlet, and a good pumper will tell you what they found.
